Rubi’s Tacos
About This Spot
Walking into Rubi’s Tacos feels like stepping into a cherished local ritual. Nestled in Chicago’s vibrant Pilsen neighborhood, this spot hums with an inviting warmth, where the lively chatter blends with occasional strains of mariachi music, creating a backdrop that feels both familiar and festive. The pace here is unhurried yet bustling—a place where neighbors linger over meals and newcomers quickly find themselves settling into the easygoing rhythm.
The atmosphere is grounded by genuine hospitality—an approachable sense that this isn’t just about grabbing a bite but sharing a moment. Tables dressed in colorful cloths beckon guests into conversations, while the friendly greetings from the owners lend a rare personal touch that anchors the space in community.
Rubi’s menu captures a deep respect for tradition and craft. Each tortilla, made to order, arrives thick, tender, and sturdy—a perfect foundation holding delicacies that balance soulfulness and complexity. From the rich, smoky hues of al pastor to the subtle earthiness of huitlacoche quesadillas, every bite tells a story of places and people. Beyond tacos, the offerings pulse with creative spirit, whether it’s the playful crackle of Elote topped with Hot Cheetos or the refreshing whisper of homemade horchata and guava aguas. These flavors linger, inviting conversation and second helpings alike.
What truly sets Rubi’s apart is how it manages to be both a familiar neighborhood gathering spot and a landmark of Chicago’s evolving food scene. There’s an authenticity here that resonates—not just in the kitchen but in the smiles exchanged and the shared anticipation waiting between each course. It’s the kind of place you return to, not just for the food, but for the feeling of being part of a quietly celebrated tradition.

FOOD WAS SO GOOD! I got the Al pastor which was unbelievable you have to put green salsa on it. The food was so authentic I literally thought I was in Mexico. wonderful mariachi was in the background. Also be sure to get quesadilla the cheese pull in it is so satisfying. Lastly the atmosphere was great love the tablecloths. The only bad thing is that now after trying these all other tacos are gone love this place so much.

We stopped in for lunch and had Al Pastor, Asada, and Lengua tacos as well as an Elote and Churros. All were amazing and beat all my expectations compared to other places I have tried! Each individual tacos had there own unique and wonderful flavor! So good we ordered one more to go and have later and still enjoyed it's lasting taste! Highly recommend!

Founded in 1997, Rubi's transformed from a taco stand into one of Chicago's most iconic taco spots, earning attention from local, national, and even international media. This unreal trajectory immediately became so inevitable the moment I tried their food. Their tacos were seriously good. They make every tortilla to order and it shows: thick, hand-patted, soft and pliable while still sturdy, with that unmistakable fresh masa aroma. Their blue corn tortillas are just as good with a more complex, earthier flavor profile. Both the al pastor and asada were incredibly flavorful and delectable. The salsa situation alone is worth mentioning: a whole fridge stocked with at least seven different house-made salsas. Where else can you find that? And to top it off, every single salsa we tried was great. Order one if you’re polite, two if you’re sensible, and three or four if you’re honest with yourself.

Great Food and service. Owner greeted us and explain everything on the menu. Love the decor of the restaurant. All employees very friendly and constantly came to see if we needed anything. Definitely recommend and will be going back. Tacos were on point.

Took my mom for Pozole Thursday and it was absolutely delicious. I had the torta de milanesa de pollo, which was just as amazing. You really can’t go wrong with this spot. The atmosphere is lively and the owners are truly salt-of-the-earth people. I can’t wait to come back and try the menudo. Such an incredible place!

Very attentive ordering process followed by some delicious tacos and tortas. I'd recommend tacos solely on homemade tortillas. Great seasoning on food! We tried asada, pastor, lengua and estofada and loved them all. Wash them down with an horchata.

OMG….these tacos were so delicious. The steak taco was seasoned well and the chicken taco was juicy. I had the cactus and mushroom taco for the first time, but I didn’t care for them. I’m definitely a meat eater. I found it strange that they didn’t have shrimp tacos. They offered a variety of shared sauces and the seating is shared. Tacos were $6 each and worth it. I usually eat 3 tacos, but I could’ve just ordered 2 and been satisfied. I’ll go back and recommend the place.

Had lunch here and it was amazing. Their al pastor tacos were delicious and so were the chicharrón en salsa verde tacos. My husband had the steak tacos as well as the al pastor and he said they were really good. Their ensalada de nopal (cactus salad) hit the spot. Service was really friendly. Great place!
